William deGarthe Provincial Park
Peggy's Cove

deGarth self-portraitWilliam E. deGarthe carved this lasting monument to Nova Scotian fishermen on the 30 m (100-ft) face of a granite outcropping behind his house.  The sculpture depicts 32 fishermen, their wives and children, St. Elmo with wings spread, and the legendary Peggy of Peggy's Cove.

The monument is segmented into three sections.  The first section depicts the fisherman's family with St. Elmo, the patron saint of sailors.  The second section depicts Peggy of the Cove, and the third section shows fishermen at work with a dory, nets, a high-flyer and other fishing implements.

Many other artistic accomplishments of William deGarthe's still remain in the Cove in the deGarthe Gallery and St. John's Anglican church.
