SS Atlantic Heritage Park
Terence Bay

The SS Atlantic Heritage Park and Interpretation Centre is located at the burial site of 277 of those who had been lost at sea during the tragic sinking of the White Star Line ship, the SS Atlantic in 1873. The park and Interpretation Centre are part of a conservation effort in preserving the gravesite and educating the public on an important part of maritime history. While walking in the park, visitors will see the monument erected in memory of those who perished, a gazebo, a boardwalk and memorial benches, all along the picturesque shoreline.

The Interpretation Centre houses many artifacts claimed from the shipwreck by divers, salvage workers, and various members of the community. One of the most exciting and recent artifacts is a White Star Line flag donated by Andrew Thomas, the great grandson of James Williams, who was captain of the SS Atlantic. As well as artifacts, the Interpretation Centre has information panels about the wreck and the community of Terence Bay during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. There is also a craft shop located in the Centre; local artisans have made many of the crafts and there are various items to choose from in the search for souvenirs!

The SS Atlantic Heritage Park and Interpretation Centre are family friendly; we offer picnic tables, public washrooms and refreshments including, tea, coffee, pop, juice and cookies. The property is wheelchair accessible.

This location is one of the sites included in the Coastal Heritage Trail Project developed by the St. Margaret’s Bay Regional Tourism Development Association; it is administered and operated by the SS Atlantic Heritage Park Society. Bus tours are welcome.
